A Queen and a King

This was to be one of our busier days as we rode in two vans from Columbus to Cincinnati on the Ohio River.

Heute Morgen gegen circa 8.00 Uhr machten sich zwei Vans,  voll mit mehr oder weniger wachen Jugendlichen und den vier Betreuern auf den Weg nach Cincinnati am Ohio River. 

We gathered on the mezzanine of the Freedom Center for a photo-op with the historic Ohio River and Kentucky in the background.

Dort besuchten wir das Underground Railroad Freedom Center und natürlich durfte auch ein Foto mit dem Fluss und dem Nachbarstaat Kentucky, auf der anderen Seite nicht fehlen. 

                        

But, first, you need to see what traveling in a van is like....thanks to Christian Kalix and Doug Headly for the driving....and the rest of us sleeping.

Wie gesagt, mehr oder weniger wach beschreibt dann auch die Stimmung auf dem Weg nach Cincinnati ganz gut. Danke an unsere Fahrer Christian Kalix und Doug Headly !

This is an actual slave house which was recued and preserved for display in the Freedom Center. It housed slaves and then cured tobacco before being abandoned.

                       

The above poster is a stark reminder of the inhumanity of the slave trade as humans were treated as mere property to be auctioned and transported and put to work.

Diese Liste zeigt, dass die Sklaven nicht als Menschen sondern als Inventar angesehen wurden.  Mit ihnen wurde Handel getrieben, sie wurden wie Vieh auf Märkten von potentiellen Käufern begutachtet und an denjenigen versteigert, der das höchste Gebot abgab.

The Freedom Center is located on the Ohio River in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Ohio River marked the line between slavery and freedom for African slaves. Though it should be noted that while the newly escaped former slaves were "free" in Ohio and the North, they still faced harsh discrimination in all aspects of their lives.

We decided to walk the bridge between Kentucky and Ohio...across the historic Ohio River.

Das Freedom Center steht nicht grundlos am Ufer des Ohio Rivers, es wurde hier erbaut, da der Fluss früher die Grenze zwischen Sklaverei und "Freiheit" beschrieb. 

In Kentucky waren die Skalven noch Besitz der Händler und auf der andere Seite, in Ohio, waren sie "freie" Menschen. Die Freiheit steht deswegen in Anführungszeichen, weil die Sklaven auch im Norden noch keine wirklich freien Menschen waren, sie hatten auch hier noch mit starker Diskriminierung und Verfolgung zu kämpfen. Aus diesem Grund ist auch der Großteil der Sklaven nach Kanada weitergezogen, denn dort war Sklaverei gesetzlich verboten und sie freie Menschen.

Bob hat mal wieder seine Kompetenzen im Bereich der Bildbearbeitung bewiesen und dieses Bild von Megan in ein Gemälde verwandelt. 

  

Look carefully and you will see every Young Ambassador and the adult advisors...on the Ohio River waterfront....this is a sign which reads..."Sing the Queen City." Not sure that the idea is for singing here....but Cincinnati is called the Queen City. 

Wenn man genau hinguckt kann man auf diesem Foto eventuell einige Young Ambassadors und Teamer erkennen :D 

                       

We wanted some group time for discussion. The rain came through for 15 minutes but we sat nearby this urban waterfall and discussed and stayed dry. It was fun!

   

                                    

Next Stop: King's Island Amusement Park north of Cincinnati. Here is a tip: go after 4 pm. The crowds have thinned and you can ride and ride and ride without lines! This was a great afternoon and evening. On the ride above....Kerstin and Bob rode to the top....and dropped!

Am Nachmittag ging es dann noch nach King's Island, einen Freizeitpark nördlich von Cincinnati. In kleinen Gruppen haben wir den Freizeitpark unsicher gemacht, allerdings hat uns ein 65 jähriger Pfarrer echt die Show gestohlen.
